Transnational Party Organisation*

The TPO database maps how political parties organise and maintain connections beyond their national borders. It measures different forms of transnational party organisation, including physical infrastructure such as international branches, offices, and networks, organisational structures and rules, and digital outreach through social media platforms.

The database works with different levels and indicators for each level. For example, it examines whether parties have official branches abroad, how formalised these organisations are, whether members abroad have rights within the party, and how parties communicate with citizens living overseas.

It also looks at the activities of these networks, as well as their online presence on social media platforms. Overall, the database helps researchers and the broader public better understand how political parties operate across borders and engage with non-resident citizens.

Organisational variation Organisational variation captures how transnational party infrastructure is structured and linked to the national party. Formalisation Statutory recognition. Registration of branches. Membership status of members abroad. Branches with their own rules and procedures. Type and regularity of activities. Incorporation Organisation initiated at home or abroad. Organisation controlled by the home party. Ideological linkage. Formal rights within the national party. Influence over domestic party policy. Delegation in the national party organisation. Financial support from the national party.

Digital infrastructure Social media Digital transnational party infrastructure captures dedicated expat or external-citizen channels on major social media platforms. Presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter/X, or TikTok. Audience size, measured through follower counts where available. Recency of activity, measured through the last entry.

Score Level Infrastructure High international website or office and branches or contacts abroad. Medium international division, party branches, or external contacts. Low no organisational infrastructure. Formalisation High statutory recognition, formally registered branches, official members, institutionalised rules, and regular activities for citizens abroad. Low one or more of these conditions is not met. Incorporation High initiated and controlled by the home party, ideologically linked, formal rights for external members, national-party representation, and influence over policy. Low one or more of these conditions is not met. Social media High more than two dedicated expat channels. Medium one or two dedicated expat channels. Low no dedicated expat social-media channel.
